What do I mean by British herbs? I mean the wonderful array of delicious and nutritious herbs that used to be grown in our soil, in our climate through Roman, Medieval and Elizabethan times. Somewhere along the line they fell from grace to be replaced by just six or eight supermarket standards. After many years of globetrotting for work, indulging my foodie obsessions along the way, I started wondering whatever happened to British foodie heritage and culture. I could eat Italian in Tokyo and Japanese in Rome; French in Hanoi and Vietnamese in Paris. Other countries had a distinctive and exportable culinary heritage. No-one ever suggested we just pop round to our little neighbourhood ‘British’. Ask non-Brits about British food and if you don’t draw a complete blank you might get ‘fish and chips’.
